SCHOOL POLICY MANUAL-2024-2025

For children to fulfil their potenal in reading, we seek as much parental support as possible and our aim, with this policy, is to demonstrate how school and home can work together to ameliorate students’ wring skills. The staff assess atainment in reading every term to update the student Target Tracker, using evaluaons made on their planning and guided reading sessions, writen assessments of comprehension and independent learning the children have produced – either writen or verbal. In the Secondary School, one lesson per week is dedicated to teaching, Reading and Thinking strategies and students are exposed to various genres. The FIVE Strategies for Reading approach is employed. Students analyse different text types to idenfy the h idden meanings and complex inference from the text. These skills are further enhanced during the scheduled library lessons using Reading Logs. Reading skills are tracked using specific ‘I can’ statement for each text types. Teachers administer assessments every two weeks and consolidate the progress for each skill or text types each month. This tracking is even integrated with wring lessons so that students retrieve, analyse and develop the passages to extended wring forms. All reading lessons reflect deducon, decoding and inference and analyzing the language strategies based on different Text Types. Students are exposed to current and real - life situaons through various online arcles and newspaper reports; they idenfy unstated assumpons, biases, and points of views and show how they undermine the argument the author is making during their Literature lessons.
