SCHOOL POLICY MANUAL-2024-2025
READING POLICY Aim:
Our predominant aim for Reading at ADHS is to promote high standards of literacy by equipping students with a strong command of the spoken and writen word, and to develop their love of literature through widespread reading for enjoyment.
To promote high standards of literacy, we aim to ensure that all students: • read easily, fluently, with obvious enjoyment and good understanding
• develop the habit of reading widely and often, for both pleasure and information • acquire a wide vocabulary, an understanding of grammar and knowledge of linguistic conventions for reading, writing and spoken language • can articulate their ideas clearly and confidently. • write clearly, accurately and coherently, adapting their language and style in and for a range of contexts, purposes and audiences modelled in their reading. In the Primary School, phonics is emphasized in the early teaching of reading to secure independent decoding and we use the Jolly Phonics programme to achieve this. Teaching in Guided Reading sessions, across the school, focusses on developing students’ competence in both word reading and comprehension as outlined in the Naonal Curriculum Programmes of Study for Reading. Students follow a rigorous reading programme in the KS1 which ensures that every child has been heard reading by the teacher at least once a week Students in the Primary are screened for their phonic knowledge once every term in both KS1 and KS2. Addionally, all students are administered the Burt Reading Test which helps compare their reading age with their chronological age. This informaon is used to plan reading intervenon or target students for advanced programmes eg. internal and external compeons related to English language. Students of Y2- 6 take an online comprehension test which gives each student a Lexile score. The online reading plaorm Scholasc Literacy Pro provides the students with ample reading material matching their independent Lexile score and their areas of interest. Within literacy lessons we create an environment that smulates the generaon of ideas from texts where all ideas are accepted and valued. EYFS: In EYFS, reading is an important feature inside and outside the classroom. Reading is promoted through a range of ways: • Book corners that are smulang and accessible, owned and loved by children, indoors and outdoors. • Using core books to plan acvies as per the children’s interests Children can read to an adult using levelled reading books once a week. Reading records (Reading Log Book) communicates reading progress between home and school, include teachers’ and parents’ feedback. Apart from this, students have access to a wide range of books in the school library. Teachers also assign reading books online and track the performance on the comprehension task. Throughout the books there are quiz quesons for children to complete.
