SCHOOL POLICY MANUAL-2024-2025
SUN SAFETY POLICY PURPOSE: ADHS acknowledges the importance of sun protecon and want children and staff to be protected from the harmful UV rays from the sun, during the school day. SCOPE: As a school we will: Develop staff awareness, i.e. through provision of informaon regarding sun safety and available resources to teachers Encourage parents to provide suitable sunhats and sun cream. Encourage children to seek shade during playmes and lunchmes to try and reduce sun exposure We will talk about being sun sensible in assemblies at the start of the summer term and before summer break. A leter will be sent to parents and guardians at the start of the summer term, explaining what we are doing about sun protecon and how they can help. Sun safety informaon will be provided around the school concerning our sun safety policy. RESPONSIBILITIES: Staying in shade Students will be encouraged to play in the shade, wherever this is available. We will put up more canopies to provide addional shade. Covering up Children should wear wide-brimmed hats that shade the ears, face and neck while outdoors. All school staff will wear hats when on playground duty and teaching outdoors. Drinking water: Teachers will ensure water is available and encourage children to drink fluids regularly during hot weather. Applying sunscreen: Student should have used the sun cream at home, before it is applied at school, to avoid any allergic reacon. Normally, children will be encouraged to apply their own cream under the supervision of an adult. A writen request may be provided by the parent to the clinic, for the applicaon of the sun cream for the child during school hours when required SUPPORTING STRATEGIES Develop a proacve supervision procedure during break (i.e. check children for appropriate are - sunhats etc., encourage the use of shade). This should parcularly focus on children whose parents have not provided them with sun cream. Sunhats will be acvely encouraged. Provide parents with informaon on prevenve strategies for sun safety through school newsleters. Encourage and ensure through advance noce that parents, staff and children use a prevenve approach on special, all- day acvies such as PE days, educaonal visits and sports days Ulize shaded areas for outdoor play. The teachers determine whether to schedule the PE class as decided or cancel the class along with the breaks and all outdoor acvies depending on the value derived from the below table.
