All child protec�on concerns should be acted upon immediately. If you are concerned that a child might be at risk or is actually suffering abuse: • Listen to what is being said without displaying shock or disbelief. • Accept what is being said. • Allow the child to talk freely. • Reassure the pupil, but do not make promises which might be impossible to keep. • Reassure the pupil that what has happened is not their fault and stress that it was right to talk. • Listen rather than ask direct ques�ons; ask minimal open rather than leading ques�ons. • Explain what has to be done next and who has to be told. • If you feel a physical examina�on & first aid is required, refer the child to the doctor in consulta�on with the CPO. Assessment and Record Keeping • Make notes as soon as possible a�er the conversa�on on the concerns form (Appendix -1) • Do not destroy the original notes in case they are needed by a court. • Record the date, �me, place and any no�ceable non -verbal behaviour and the words used by the pupil. • Record on a body map (Appendix-2) the site of any injury – do NOT take photos. • Record statements and observa�ons, not interpreta�ons or assump�ons. • All informa�on rela�ng to Child Protec�on is maintained within a confiden�al file. 3. Role of the Child Protection Committee The Child Protec�on Commitee (CPC) cons�tutes of 5 Child Protec�on Officers (CPO), the Principal, who Heads the Child Protec�on Commitee and the Vice Principal as the Assistant Head of the CPC. The Designated Person whose main tasks are to: • Undertake an inves�ga�on if a concern is raised, whether this is an allega�on against a • Ensure that accurate records are maintained on individual cases and these are kept in a secure place and marked “strictly confiden�al”.
