Appendix 7 – Learning Walk LEARNING WALKS
A Learning Walk is a brief classroom visit ulising a researched -based tool that provides principals and teachers opportunies to reflect on what students are learning, learning strategies, student interacon with the content, and student engagement. Phases of a Learning Walk
Protocol for Learning Walks 1. What is the purpose of a Learning Walk?
To monitor and evaluate what is happening in the classroom (or, in the case of a Lesson Plan Review, what kind of planning and preparaon is taking place). This give us a really good idea of the ‘daily diet’ of our students 2. How do I know which Learning Walk I should be doing? You should follow the Learning Walk Cycle (Head of Teaching and Learning). You should be doing a different Learning Walk or Lesson Plan Review each month. 3. Should I tell my team when the Learning Walks will take place? No. We use Learning Walks and Lesson Plan Reviews to assess the typical ‘daily diet’ of the students so it is important that this is what we see. All staff have access to the Learning Walk Cycle and the Learning Walk proformas on the shared drive. 4. Do we use Learning Walks to make a formal judgement? No, we use Learning Walks to give us an informed idea about where individuals ‘are at’. Combined with lesson observaons we can see which staff have strengths in which areas and which staff would benefit from further support and training. We may make a ju dgment in order to quanfy and measure improvement, however, this judgment is for developmental purposes only and will form part of an acon plan 5. Who does the Learning Walks? Based on the objecve of the learning walk, it is undertaken by SLT and Subject Leaders. Somemes the Governors also do the Learning environment walk. All of the learning walks has a pre-determined focus. 6. What should I do with the results of the Learning Walk? You should analyse and summarise the results and share them with your Faculty and Line Manager (pro-forma to be agreed). From these results you should draw out between 1-3 targets for your Faculty/Department and specific individuals, acon these targets a nd measure the impact of the acons. The results of all of this will be used to write the Principal’s report, feed into your School Development Plan and the SEF
